What River is

There's more to your thinking than you know.

Those ideas you've got sitting there, they might want to go a little deeper. The half-made thoughts that flew on by, maybe they're just waiting to connect up and travel somewhere new.

A new hunch, a line, a feeling at the right time... many of these are the heirs to what you've already thought, ready to emerge. Say it out loud or write it down, and you're taking things further. Sometimes you discover you've said something you already knew, but in a helpful new way.

But a lot of the time, it doesn't happen this way. Your thought arrives on the drive home, or when you're out walking, but you don't quite catch it while it's fresh. And if you don't write it down, it's gone.

Perhaps the feeling of it hovers around, half finished, but it doesn't grow, it doesn't develop into the fuller shape that it could be. It stays exactly the size it was when it arrived. A thought you don't catch never gets any bigger. Three months later, it comes back around, and you let it be, once again. A few rounds of that, and you're still thinking the same way you were a year ago.

Words are how we think. Getting your words out, spoken or written, lets you put something out there, get going, and start thinking again. Often enough, what comes out will surprise you.
